Why We Need to Consistently Promote Black-Owned Businesses Year-Round
Black History Month is a time to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of Black people throughout history. It’s also a time when many businesses, corporations, and organizations highlight black-owned businesses and the products they carry. However, this promotion of black-owned businesses during a single month feels a little disingenuous. Why not promote these businesses year-round?
Promoting black-owned businesses year-round would help to address the systemic racism and inequality that exists not just in our society but specifically when it comes to Black-Owned businesses, period. For too long, Black-owned businesses have been undervalued, underrepresented, or misrepresented in the business world. By promoting them throughout the year beyond social media (or like in the current Target television commercial), we can work towards creating a more equitable business environment that supports all entrepreneurs regardless of their race.
Equally, year-round recognition is good for the economy. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and by supporting them, we can create jobs and promote economic growth in our communities. When we support black-owned businesses specifically, we are helping to close the wealth gap that has existed for far too long.
