The Importance of Setting Boundaries in Business Partnerships
When it comes to business partnerships, many believe the keys to a successful partnership are simply having a shared vision and a commitment to hard work. While these are undoubtedly important factors, they are not enough to ensure a healthy and prosperous partnership. One of the biggest challenges of working with friends, especially in business, is finding a way to maintain personal and professional boundaries. While friendships bring a certain level of camaraderie to personal lives, business partnerships are all about success, growth, and sustainability (and I am not saying you cannot get this in friendship, but it is very different when financial investments are involved).
Before entering a business partnership, establish how much time both parties will contribute to the venture. This is especially critical if one partner is actively managing the business while the other may have a full-time job. Partners need to have a clear understanding of what they are contributing and what is expected of them. Roles and responsibilities should be mutually agreed upon, and both parties must respect each other’s time and outside obligations. Both parties must understand each other’s limitations and expectations, setting clear and distinct times they are willing to dedicate to the business.
