Mann Robinson: K.A.R.M.A’s Troubled Waters Turnt 2 Success
For Mann Robinson, there is a lot to celebrate despite a pandemic. A successful and sought-after Film Director, Producer, and Actor, he is also Podcast Host, Entrepreneur, and Author.
His book A Look Into: Black Independent Filmmaking is the first Black filmmaking how to guide providing insights on independent filmmaking, resources, filming techniques, funding, film distribution, and more. If you have questions, Mann has answers. In this book, Mann openly shares not only his journey of becoming a Black independent filmmaker but provides the necessary tools for independent filmmakers of color to fulfill their dream of creating a movies that tell great stories.
While Mann had no knowledge of filmmaking or intentions of doing it, after personally seeing Spike Lee speak about it fueled an internal passion he did not know existed in him. Shifting gears (and his college major), he pursued his dream by learning everything he could, which included three years of film school after graduating from college. Of course, having Spike Lee as his Directing teacher while at NYU film school was more than bonus for him.
In 2007, Mann wrote his first film, K.A.R.M.A and in 2014 he opened his film production company, Metro Wealth Films in Atlanta, Georgia. This allowed him to have more range in the films he wanted to produce; as well as build a database of actors from the Actors Workshops he provides to aspiring actors. In 2014, he also wrote the screenplay for the successful film, TURNT, which was based on his life experiences and the experience of others in the music industry and in the streets.
Mann Robinson has many credited films streaming on national platforms like BET and UMC; and his latest film Troubles Waters began airing on BET+ at the end of last year. This film, starring Harry Lennix, Robert Patrick, Gina Ross, and Rick Fox, is about a man (Ron Waters, played by Lennix) who tries to live right but lives in the shadows of his mistakes. Mistakes that his friends and family still judge him on.
Beyond the success of his films and his book, Mann Robinson believes in community outreach. Not only is he in the process of launching a nonprofit, but this year he also wants to gift a camera to an aspiring director who shows they are passionate about a career in filmmaking. To participate in this giveaway, submit a letter directly to Metro Wealth Studios showing why you feel you should receive this camera.
So, what is next for Mann Robinson?
Be on the lookout this year for the highly anticipated Turnt 2, Super Turnt, starring Harry Lennix, Jamal Wollard, Torrei Hart, E Roger Mitchel, Dennis LA White, which was shot in Atlanta during the pandemic.
His second book, “Sober As F**K” will also be released this year to celebrate and commemorate his ten-year sobriety. He felt the need to write this book to help motivate others struggling with addiction.
And of course, he is still filming, in which he is working on six movies this year with Torrei Hart. The first being a horror film titled “Sebastian”.
